KPN introduces PON technology for speeds up to 10 Gbps over fiber (FTTH)

Summary

Within the framework of the accelerated rollout of fiber to another one million households in the next three years KPN has opted for PON technology, which makes speeds of up to 10 Gbps possible over the fiber network.

“By choosing PON technology we are ready for the future and can efficiently give an ever increasing number of customers access to a superfast gigabit connection,” says Babak Fouladi, Chief Technology and Digital Officer at KPN. “Symmetrical speeds of up to 10 Gbps will be possible in the future by using the high-quality technology and infrastructure. This underscores our ambition to lay the Dutch digital highway.”

This week KPN concluded an agreement with network and technology supplier Nokia for the use of PON technology and has now started preparatory work to introduce G-PON into the network. KPN has opted for a phased approach, whereby in the second half of 2019 PON technology will become available in the initial fiber areas, facilitating speeds of 1 Gbps. At the same time, the network is to be made ready for the simple subsequent introduction of XGS-PON (the successor of G-PON), which will make speeds of up to symmetrical 10 Gbps available.

In the last few years KPN has rolled out fiber throughout the Netherlands; the speeds of the fixed network have risen dramatically as a result. The fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) program will be completed this year. By making this choice KPN has the potential in the long-term to lay FTTH via PON technology in these areas as well, if customer wishes change.
