How the network operates
The evolution of the KPN network
In this new YouTube series “Hoe het net werkt” (How the network operates), presenter Luuk Dresen talks with a variety of tech and multimedia experts about the evolution of the KPN network. The series shows where we started, what the situation is today, and what the future holds in the domain of fixed internet, mobile internet and entertainment.
The iconic dial-up sound still invokes nostalgic feelings. Just like your first mobile phone and going to the video rental store for a movie. But a great deal has changed. Technology has made substantial advances over the years, so we have continually developed our network to the point we are at today: fast, stable fiber.
But how have we gone about this? What does KPN do to keep the network going, both in the air and under the ground? In this new YouTube series “Hoe het net werkt” (How the network operates), presenter Luuk Dresen talks with a variety of tech and multimedia experts about the evolution of our network. In the course of three episodes we show where we started, what the situation is today, and what the future holds in the domain of fixed internet, mobile internet and entertainment.
Episode 1
From dial-up internet to superfast fiber
This first episode goes into how our powerful fiber internet was developed. Internet entrepreneur Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten talks about how he took his first steps in the network. KPN’s Joost Steltenpool explains the benefits and status of the fiber network. We also talk with futurist Freija van Duijne. She uses her knowledge to give us a peek into the near future.
Episode 2
From WAP to 3, 4, 5G
Only a small part of our mobile network is actually mobile and here too we use reliable fiber internet. Toon Norp, a TNO expert in the field of 5G, explains how we got to this stage and what influence more broadband and higher frequencies have on our network. Erik Brands, KPN 5G program manager, gives us details of the extensive infrastructure behind our network. For a look at the future of mobile we talk with trendwatcher Adjiedj Bakas.
Episode 3
From video store to binge watching
We are going to the movie theater less often but we are watching more movies than ever! So it’s abundantly clear that a shift has taken place in our consumption of TV and entertainment. Bas Agterberg, Curator of Media History at Sound&Vision, tells us about the history of TV. Someone who knows all about the current TV offerings is Robin Clements of KPN. He is responsible for what you and I get to see on TV. Juliëtte van der Laarse understands full well that entertainment is more than just TV and movies. As a games technologist she is aware that the various worlds are rapidly becoming one thanks to fast internet.
